CORNET initiative

MicroSafeCoatings

The Road and Bridge Research Institute is participating in another research project entitled “Novel antimicrobial protection in powder coating for composite materials” (acronym: MicroSafeCoatings), which is being carried out within the framework of the CORNET Initiative.

The aim of the project is to develop environmentally friendly powder coatings with antimicrobial properties dedicated to the surface protection of polymer composites. Nowadays, silver, also in the form of nanoparticles, is mostly used for the antimicrobial protection of powder coatings. Despite their high antimicrobial activity, these solutions suffer from a number of drawbacks: the cost of the precious metal and its limited resources, its immunotoxic potential and its bioaccumulation. The project will use natural and synthetic substances with antimicrobial properties and modified titanium compounds. Light-resistant polyester and polyester-acrylic resins cured under low-temperature conditions will be used as paint binders so that the composite structure is not damaged during the curing process. The proposed solution will be an environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to the currently most widely used nanosilver-based antimicrobial solvent coatings.
