HISTORIC OBJECTS DIVISION

With effect from 1 January 2024, a new Historic Buildings Division was created.

The Division employs Barbara Rymsza, Ph.D., Professor at the IBDiM, who has been involved for many years in protecting national heritage and popularising the history of technology, particularly the history of bridge construction.

  • B. Rymsza designed and implemented the construction of a replica of the Jagiełło Bridge from 1410, in Czerwińsk on the Vistula (for the first time after 600 years since the Battle of Grunwald), which was preceded by research work, literature studies and many hours of discussions with specialists in bridge construction, military science and naval history. On this basis, the author developed an original concept for the construction of the Replica of the first Polish historical bridge written about by Jan Długosz.
  • B. Rymsza developed the concept and created the world's first IBDiM PONTISEUM – an exhibition of bridge structures, using relics of bridges blown up during the Warsaw Uprising found and excavated from the bottom of the Vistula River. She initiated and created the WARSAW PONTISEUM located in the centre of Warsaw.
  • B. Rymsza has contributed to the preservation of the heritage of the Polish bridge construction outside Poland. She has carried out works commissioned by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, such as:
    – Assessment of the technical condition of the Castle Bridge at the residence of the Radziwiłł Dukes in Nyasvizh, the Republic of Belarus.
  • B. Rymsza popularised the history of bridge construction in Poland. She has produced more than 50 publications on the history of technology. She prepared an exhibition dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Kierbedź Bridge and the 100th anniversary of the Poniatowski Bridge. She participated in the revitalisation of the fortress bridge in the gorge of the Bema Fort and the St. Markiewicz viaduct in Karowa Street in Warsaw as well as the fortress bridge in the Boyen Fortress in Giżycko.
  • B. Rymsza was the supervisor in the doctoral dissertation of Mistewicz A: Most Kierbedzia w Warszawie. Warsaw University of Technology, 2020. The work was distinguished.
